ARTS EDUCATION SHOWCASED

Released on April 30, 2003

An Arts Education Celebration display, showcasing more than 60 pieces of artwork from Saskatchewan students, is being held in the Cumberland Gallery at the Legislative Building during the month of May, which is Art Education Month.

"This art exhibition recognizes students' creativity and artistic contributions to visual art education and culture in Saskatchewan. These student artworks reflect the excellent work being done with the provincial Arts Education curriculum," Learning Minister Judy Junor said.

The exhibit is sponsored by Saskatchewan Learning, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Society for Education Through Art (SSEA). Many of the students whose art is exhibited attended the opening of the exhibit at the Legislative Building and were presented with a Certificate of Recognition from Saskatchewan Learning and the SSEA, as well as a congratulatory certificate from the Premier.

"Those who teach visual art see how the children respond, how their motivation stimulates productivity and how their involvement in the creative process causes them to blossom and become even more productive. This exhibition shares with the Province the students' and educators' enthusiasm in the creation and production of visual art," SSEA Provincial President Theressa Wright said.

"The arts community is a vibrant and essential part of Saskatchewan's culture, economy and our way of life," Junor said. "I want to commend the students and the SSEA for their dedication to the arts."

Arts education provides students with opportunities to express their ideas through visual art, dance, drama and music. Research shows that students who study the arts have higher grades, self-esteem, good attendance records and are more active in community affairs and leadership.
