HUNDREDS PARTICIPATE IN SASKPOWER CLIMATE CHANGE CONTEST

Released on April 22, 2003

Elementary students from across Saskatchewan were enthusiastic participants in a SaskPower Shand Greenhouse poster contest encouraging positive solutions on the issue of climate change.

"With more than 500 poster entries received from students at 46 schools, this second annual Energy and Our Environment poster contest has undoubtedly increased awareness about the challenge of climate change," Crown Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.

The contest was open to Grade 5 and 6 students in schools across Saskatchewan. The four winners were:

• Lisa Ochs, Landis
• Elise Frechette, Plenty
• John Crawford, Estevan
• Kimberley Pasieka, Melfort

"The variety and ingenuity of the ideas captured in the posters show how all of us can learn from our youth when it comes to addressing climate change. The next generation of leaders and decision makers are eager to take individual responsibility for reducing their personal impact on our environment," Sonntag added.

The poster contest is an important component of SaskPower's efforts to educate the public about the issue of climate change. There are increasing concerns that human activity – such as the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity – contributes to climate change which increase the risk of droughts, heat waves and storms.

Prizes for each of the four winners will be presented by SaskPower at their local schools before the end of the school-year. Each of the four winning students will receive a bicycle; their school will receive a $250 credit for the purchase of larger trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds and $250 worth of climate change books and reference materials for the school library.

A winning poster was also selected from each of the 46 schools that entered the contest. The student who created the best poster within that school wins free dry-mounting of their poster, making it suitable for display in their school.
