The Saskatchewan Government is moving forward with its plan to build a new health centre in Cumberland House. This announcement is part of the Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care to renew our health care system and increase access to quality health care in the province.
Health Minister John Nilson has announced $200,000 for planning and design of the new health care facility. The new health centre will include space for existing health services provided by both the Cumberland House Cree Nation and the Kelsey Trail Health Region. Service for primary care, public health, home care, health promotion and programs for people at high risk will be provided in the new centre.
"Our government's top priority is improving the quality of health services and access to care, while ensuring our health system is sustainable into the future," Nilson said. "By locating all of the health programs and services in one building there will be greater access and improved efficiencies."
Health Canada is investing $60,000 to support the planning and design phase of the Cumberland House health centre.
"This project is further evidence of the Government of Canada's commitment to deliver high quality health care services to First Nations and other northern residents, no matter where they live," said federal Health Minister Anne McLellan.
Saskatchewan Health is working closely with the Kelsey Trail Regional Health Authority and its community partners to finalize the scope, cost and design of the project. The health centre will serve the Village of Cumberland House, and the Cumberland House Cree Nation.
Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger said the new health centre demonstrates the government of Saskatchewan's commitment to a Northern Health Strategy.
"This is an excellent example of community collaboration," Belanger said. "I commend the many people who have come together on this project to ensure the Cumberland House community has access to the health services they need."
Kelsey Trail Regional Health Authority Chair Carol Hayward said this integrated project is a clear example of how the health authority is focusing on increasing access to quality patient care.
"The new health centre will offer a variety of health services that reflect the diverse needs of our community and will have a positive effect on the health and well-being of our residents," Hayward said.
The province will contribute approximately 65 per cent of the total project construction costs, with the balance funded by the community and the federal government. Projects of this nature typically cost between $2 million to $3 million.
