ENERGY CONFERENCE ATTRACTS INDUSTRY LEADERS

The spotlight will be on Saskatchewan's dynamic energy sector at a major conference in Regina Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Approximately 180 industry leaders, mainly from western Canada, will attend Explore Our Energy 2003. The conference provides a forum to examine current issues and future directions for the province's energy industry, including the role of research and technology, alternative energy opportunities, heavy oil production and upgrading, and the importance of partnerships.

"This conference reinforces the accomplishments of our government's open dialogue with the energy sector," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "Participants will learn about what has been done in this province to increase the value of our energy resources and to cultivate opportunities for even more growth."

A portion of the conference includes leading edge research and development in a number of areas that will enhance resource recovery, long-term profitability and environmental protection. Delegates will tour the Greenhouse Gas Technology Centre and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, and private sector companies will make presentations on pursuing alternate energy opportunities in Saskatchewan.

"This is an ambitious and comprehensive conference," conference chair James Baker of J.P. Baker Management said. "It covers the competitive strengths and opportunities available in Saskatchewan's energy sector, as well as who is doing what. It's about leading-edge knowledge and practices in an industry that is building momentum and prosperity."

Saskatchewan is Canada's second highest oil producing and third highest natural gas producing province. This sector is the largest contributor to the economy at eight per cent of gross domestic product. Last year, $1.4 billion was invested in oil and gas exploration and development. The sector provides about 22,000 direct and indirect jobs in the province.
