CHILDCARE PROJECT SUPPORTS FARM FAMILIES

Released on September 30, 2002

A Shaunavon childcare centre is receiving $8,800 from the provincial

government to continue a program that meets the unique needs of farm

families.

Social Services Minister Glenn Hagel presented a cheque from the Community

Solutions Program to the Shaunavon Daycare Co-operative at a special

presentation today. The funding allows the agency to provide in-home

childcare services to farm families during peak farming periods. These

services include transportation, extended hours and weekend care.

"We all know that farming is not a nine-to-five job," Hagel said. "This

service ensures farm families have access to quality childcare at crucial

times, such as spring seeding and harvest."

"This year's provincial budget provides an additional $200,000 to the

Community Solutions Program, bringing total funding to $645,000. This is

part of a $1.7 million new investment in childcare through the Building

Independence Initiative."

Community Solutions supports initiatives that help childcare centres

include children and families with special needs, help parents enter the

workforce, meet the needs of northern and rural communities, or are

workplace sponsored.
