NEW QUARTERLY POPULATION STATS OUT

Released on September 26, 2002

New figures released today show Saskatchewan is holding its own on

population.

Quarterly population figures from Statistics Canada indicate the province's

population was estimated at 1,011,808 as of July 1. That's basically

unchanged from the population estimate on April 1, 2002 - a decrease of

less than one-tenth of one per cent.

"These figures suggest that our population numbers may be starting to

mirror the job growth we've seen in recent months," Industry and Resources

Minister Eldon Lautermilch said. "Our economy overall is resilient and

diversified, we've got economic momentum and we've seen strong job numbers

in the last four months. These indicators will ultimately translate into

better population figures long-term."

Saskatchewan has posted four straight months of job growth year over year

and August's numbers were the highest for any August on record. Non-

agricultural employment is up 6,300 over the first eight months of this

year.

Net inter-provincial out-migration was down this last quarter from the

first quarter of 2002 and the comparable second quarter of 2001.

New figures show Saskatchewan leading the country in retail sales growth

year over year. Department store sales, residential building permits,

natural gas and mineral production, new motor vehicle sales and new

business incorporations are all up. New capital investment in Saskatchewan

is expected to grow by 5.7 per cent this year, the third highest percentage

increase of any province.

"This province is a great place to live, work and invest in, and we're

taking steps to create an even better climate for new business growth,"

Lautermilch said. "Bond rating agencies have noted that our tax cuts and

diversification have allowed Saskatchewan to strengthen its economic

fundamentals. And it's those fundamentals that are leading to new

investment and new jobs, and a return to the solid population growth that

we enjoyed for most of the past decade."
