A major renovation and addition is planned at Balgonie Elementary School toaccommodate K-8 students by the next school year. Saskatchewan Learning is
contributing $900,000 to this $1.6 million project, sharing the cost with
the Buffalo Plains School Division.
"We are investing in schools, in students, and in the future of
Saskatchewan," Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk said. "The Balgonie
Elementary School has served students very well for years. However, the
time has come to provide a more modern, integrated education facility."
The project includes new space for classrooms, a multi-purpose lab, a band
room, a staff workroom, and renovations to enhance space and link the
addition to the school. There will be over 1,000 square metres of new and
renovated space.
This project is a key part of the division's plan to restructure the school
system in the communities on the east side of the Buffalo Plains School
Division.
"We're delighted that Balgonie Elementary School is growing to include
grade seven and eight students," Buffalo Plains School Division Board Chair
Rodney Luhning said. "This is an exciting day for everyone connected to
the school."
With $40 million in the Department of Learning capital budget for schools,
approximately 140 school construction, renovation and upgrading projects
will be funded in communities around the province this fiscal year. An
additional $20 million over four years is being spent on school facilities
from the Centenary Fund, which was announced in 2000.
