HELP FOR INNOVATIVE CHILDCARE PROJECTS

Released on September 9, 2002

Four Regina agencies today received a total of $195,000 in funding under

the Community Solutions program to provide 28 additional child care spaces

and improved human resource co-ordination for all Regina day care centres.

Specific projects to be funded include:

Circle Project is receiving two grants totalling of $74,460 for 15

childcare spaces for families such as those involved in the Kids

First program;

First Avenue Child Care Inc. is receiving $72,440 to fund 12 child

care spaces for parents participating in training and education

programs offered at the Regina and District Food Bank;

The Twenty-Four Hour Child Care Co-operative is receiving $37,000

to hire a family support worker; and

The Regina Daycare Directors Inc. is receiving $11,450 to develop

and maintain a database of qualified individuals to work as

alternates/substitutes in licensed childcare centres and homes in

Regina.

"This year's provincial budget provides an additional $200,000 to the

Community Solutions program, bringing total funding to $645,000," Hagel

said. "This is part of a $1.7 million new investment in childcare through

the Building Independence initiative."

"Community Solutions supports childcare initiatives that help childcare

centres include children and families with special needs, help parents

enter the workforce, meet the needs of northern and rural communities, or

are workplace sponsored," Hagel said.

"Since 2000-2001, the Community Solutions program has assisted communities

to meet the needs of children and their families by providing funding for

projects attached to a childcare service and demonstrate community

support," Hagel said.
