SIX CITIZENS RECEIVE PROVINCE'S HIGHEST HONOUR

Released on October 30, 2002

Six citizens were invested by Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock with the

province's highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, at a ceremony

in Regina today:



Nahid Ahmad of Saskatoon, an outstanding contributor to health

care, medical



research, and in the field of immigrant women and visible minority

women;



Joe Fafard, Lumsden artist and sculptor;



Claude Petit, Saskatoon Metis leader, war veteran and champion

boxer;



Roger Phillips, Regina business leader and former chief executive

officer of IPSCO;



Bill Small of Craven, a founding director of the Canadian Western

Agribition, and founding chairman of the Western Canada Farm

Progress Show; and



Dr. Charles Williams, Saskatoon agrologist and educator, active

with the Saskatchewan Agrivision Corporation and the SAC Hibernia

(Ethanol) Strategy Task Force.



The investiture ceremony was followed by a dinner hosted by Premier Lorne

Calvert to honour the recipients.



Including the six new members, the 109 appointments to the Order of Merit

in the 17 years since its inception in 1985 have recognized contributions

in the arts, agriculture, business and industry, research and education,

the professions, public service, community leadership and volunteer service.
