4-H WEEK CELEBRATED

Released on October 30, 2002

More than 4,000 Saskatchewan 4-H members and 1,200 leaders will soon

celebrate their 85th anniversary.

November 4th to 10th has been proclaimed as 4-H Week in Saskatchewan in

conjunction with National 4-H Week.

"The 4-H program's emphasis on learning new skills in order to develop

confidence and leadership ability has served the youth of this province

very well," Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization

Minister Clay Serby said. "The 4-H motto, 'Learn to do by doing,' has

attracted youth for decades and allowed 4-H to be among the most long-lived

youth programs in the province."

Serby said Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization has

provided funding of $475,000 to support the Saskatchewan 4-H Council in

2002-03.

In Saskatchewan, there are 238 4-H clubs in both rural and urban areas.

Members have a choice of 26 different types of projects depending on the

interests of the young people participating.

"Projects in Saskatchewan include beef, dairy, horse, rodeo, pets,

photography, drama, and gardening, among others," Executive Director of the

Saskatchewan 4-H Council Valerie Smith said.

All 4-H members are eligible to participate in the annual public speaking

programs and there are numerous opportunities for travel and educational

scholarships.
