INCREASING THE NUMBER OF COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Released on October 28, 2002

The provincial government will increase the number of funded community

schools in Saskatchewan by five this year to a total of 88.

Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Minister Clay

Serby made the announcement at St. Mary's Community School in Yorkton today

on behalf of Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk. St. Mary's is one of five

schools being added to the province's community schools program this year.

"One of the most important things we can do as a government is to support

our children to succeed in school and in life," Serby said. "We know that

the support provided through community schools pays off in long-term

benefits."

Community schools draw on parent and community involvement in the school to

help students develop and learn. Preschoolers, students and their families

are provided with enhanced programming such as pre-kindergarten, nutrition

programs, cultural activities, and adult education and training

opportunities.

"The Role of the School Task Force praised the value of community schools,

calling for an increase in the number of community schools," Serby

said. "In keeping with the task force and the provincial government's

vision of School Plus, we are pleased to continue expanding the community

schools program."

The number of community schools has more than doubled from 41 in 2000 to 88

this year. Since last year, community schools have extended from urban

elementary and northern schools to secondary and rural schools.

The five new community schools are located in Yorkton, Cando, Canwood, St.

Louis and Green Lake.
