INDUSTRY CELEBRATES OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN THE TRADES

Released on October 25, 2002

This evening about 60 awards and scholarships will be presented to

outstanding apprentices and training partners as part of Saskatchewan's

second annual Apprenticeship Awards, sponsored by the Saskatchewan

Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (ATCC).

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

apprentice/tradesperson with top marks in their journeyperson

certification;

outstanding technical training team;

outstanding trade board; and

Skills Canada Saskatchewan apprentice gold medal winners.

Employers and supervising journeypersons will also be recognized for their

contribution to training and certification.

"Apprenticeship training is founded on strong partnerships between

apprentices, tradespersons, journeypersons, employers, trade boards,

training deliverers, the ATCC, and government," Learning Minister and

minister responsible for the ATCC Jim Melenchuk said. "Saskatchewan has a

strong apprenticeship system that is highly respected throughout the rest

of Canada because of these partnerships."

"Through industry-led partnerships we are ensuring apprenticeship training

meets industry's labour market needs," ATCC Board Chair Paul McLellan

said. "We are also increasing access to quality careers for youth and

underrepresented groups, matching the skills needed for jobs now and in the

future, and ensuring training is delivered with flexibility and innovation

for the changing job market. These awards are our formal step in honouring

the outstanding achievement of many of our partnerships in these areas."

Approximately, 5,200 apprentices and their employers are participating in

the 47 designated trades in Saskatchewan. These young people choose

apprenticeship because it allows them to earn a salary and contribute to

the economy while learning their trade.
