The Meadow Lake Arena will more effectively meet the needs of arearesidents and organizations thanks to total funding of $100,000 from the
provincial Community Initiatives Fund.
The provincial funding will help pay to replace the current arena floor
with an insulated concrete floor and to replace the current surrounding
boards with aluminum boards. The insulation placed below the concrete
floor will eliminate problems associated with perma frost build-up. The
renovations will reduce maintenance costs, extend the life of the arena and
will make the ice plant more efficient.
Crown Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag, on behalf of
Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford, presented a $75,000
cheque, representing 75 per cent of the total provincial support, to Meadow
Lake Town Alderman Darwin Obridgewitsch. The Minister said the hard work
of the Town of Meadow Lake will be appreciated by residents of the area for
many years to come.
"This forward-looking project will allow people from the entire district to
increase their enjoyment of the activities taking place at the arena. Our
arena is at the heart of our community and offers opportunities for safe,
fun and useful recreation. The improvements are an investment in the
future of the Meadow Lake area," Sonntag said. "The Government of
Saskatchewan is pleased to contribute to the success of the project."
The arena is used year-round for a wide variety of activities including
hockey, figure skating, dances, bingos, graduations, indoor rodeo and
roller skating. The facility serves a district population of about 12,000.
"The province's financial support made it possible for the Town of Meadow
Lake to renovate the arena. The renovations have extended the life of the
arena and will make a big difference to the enjoyment of people using the
building," Obridgewitsch said.
The province's Community Initiatives Fund was created in 1997 to distribute
a portion of casino profits for the benefit of Saskatchewan people. Since
then, more than 1,800 community groups have received a total of almost
$11.5 million.
