INCREASE IN PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS

Released on October 23, 2002

The provincial government today announced an expansion of the Pre-

kindergarten (Pre-k) programs in six new schools this year. In 2002-03 the

program will expand to six schools located in Cando, Canwood, Moose Jaw,

Green Lake, Yorkton and St. Louis.

"I am pleased to announce that this means we now have 85 schools that have

pre-kindergarten programs," Regina Elphinstone MLA Warren McCall said, on

behalf of Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk during a visit to the Kitchener

Community School Pre-k in Regina. "Pre-kindergarten is designed to give

our province's children a better start in school and in life."

The event took place during Education Week and marks the 25th anniversary

of Kitchener Community School Pre-k . Pre-kindergarten programs, like

those at Kitchener School, are a comprehensive initiative linked to

kindergarten readiness. The program supports language and speech

development and cultural diversity. Pre-kindergarten programs emphasize

parent participation and provide parent learning opportunities.

"The Role of the School Task Force recognized and praised the value of Pre-

kindergarten programs. In keeping with the School Plus vision of the Task

Force and the provincial government, we are very excited about this Pre-

kindergarten program expansion," McCall said.

"We know that quality programming benefits all children. With the support

of Saskatchewan Learning there are now more than 1,300 children and their

families who benefit from Pre-k programs," Pre-k teacher at Kitchener

Community School Peggy Adamack said.
