GRADING AND SURFACING HIGHWAY 55 WEST OF MEADOW LAKE

Released on October 22, 2002

Work has begun on a 10.9 km grading and surfacing project on Highway 55

west of Meadow Lake.

"Grading and surfacing is part of our commitment to building better

highways," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work

on this $3.2 million project will be completed next construction season in

2003, and will require an estimated 75 full-time workers."

Grading and surfacing is taking place from 5.5 km south of the Beaver River

to 5.4 km northwest of the Beaver River, between Golden Ridge and Rapid

View. Vector Enterprises Ltd. was awarded the contract for this project.

"This project will help maintain Highway 55, an important trade and

transportation route for northwest Saskatchewan," Wartman

said. "Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is working hard to fix

roads across the province to support trade and improve driver safety."

The government has committed $293 million to building better highways in

2002-03. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved this

year.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed and drive safely through the Orange

Zone and to watch for construction signs and heavy equipment during the

remainder of this busy construction season.
