The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse in Estevan is now accepting applications for
tree and shrub seedlings for the 2003 planting year. The seedlings are
available at no cost to community and non-profit groups, as well as select
individuals for use in environmental, reclamation, conservation or wildlife
projects.
"The bulk of our seedlings are distributed to not-for-profit agencies,
service clubs, conservation agencies and individual land owners interested
in preserving and enhancing Saskatchewan's natural landscape," Crown
Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.
The greenhouse invests $500,000 each year to grow and distribute over
400,000 trees across Saskatchewan. Since 1991, it has distributed over 3
million tree and shrub seedlings.
"All trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, so the annual
distribution and planting of thousands of trees contribute to efforts to
address the challenge of climate change," Sonntag said. "Programs like
this, which help offset greenhouse gas emissions, are an important part of
SaskPower's efforts to minimize the impact of our operations on our
environment."
Seedlings will be distributed for planting in early spring, along with
information on how to care for them. The seedlings will be delivered to
distribution points across the province for local pickup.
