HOUSING RENOVATIONS BENEFIT MOOSE JAW SENIORS

Released on November 27, 2002

Residents of Victoria Towers in Moose Jaw are enjoying an enhanced quality

of life, following a $450,000 expansion and renovation of the common area

of their seniors' project.

Funding was provided by the province, with a five per cent contribution

from the City of Moose Jaw.

"Our seniors helped build Saskatchewan, and we are committed to ensuring

they have adequate, suitable, affordable housing in their retirement,"

Social Services Minister Glenn Hagel said at the grand opening. "The

expansion and renovation of the common area at Victoria Towers has improved

social and recreational opportunities, enriching the lifestyles of

residents."

The renovations included the construction of a new kitchen, as well as the

conversion of the old kitchen into office space for an assisted-living-

services activity worker. The renovations will allow for a daily meal

program, exercise programs, arts and crafts, special suppers,

entertainment, and other social gatherings at Victoria Towers.

"We are pleased to have partnered with the province in the improvements at

Victoria Towers," Moose Jaw Mayor Al Schwinghamer said. "I'd like to thank

the Moose Jaw Housing Authority for initiating this worthy initiative, and

seeing it through to completion."

The renovated and expanded common area has been named 'The Willy Hodgson

Life Enhancement Center,' in honour of Ms. Willy Hodgson a member of the

board of the Moose Jaw Housing Authority since 1995, and a recipient of the

Order of Canada, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and the Moose Jaw Citizen

of the Year Award in recognition of her extensive community service.

Victoria Towers is a 154-unit housing project for seniors managed on behalf

of the province by the Moose Jaw Housing Authority.
