CALENDAR FEATURES STUDENTS' ARTWORK

Released on November 25, 2002

Saskatchewan students will have their winning farm safety artwork featured

in Saskatchewan Labour's 2003 Farm Safety Calendar.

The 2003 Grand Prize winner is Mandy Kuhn, a 13 year old grade seven

student from Denzil Sacred Heart School in Denzil. Mandy will receive $100

for her machinery safety poster highlighting hazards associated with extra

riders on tractors.

Saskatchewan Labour's Farm Safety Calendar educates young people and their

families about hazards associated with farming.

"Most work related injuries - whether on the farm or in the factory - are

preventable," Labour Minister Deb Higgins said. "Every student who entered

the contest is a winner because they are helping to prevent injuries and

deaths by promoting good farm health and safety practices."

Artwork for the calendar was chosen from the more than 2,500 entries to

this year's Farm Safety Poster contest. More than 20,000 students have

entered the contest since its launch in 1996 and Farm Safety Calendars have

been distributed to over 200,000 homes and businesses.

The contest, open to all students from kindergarten to grade nine, awards

prizes to four age groups in three safety areas - machinery safety, yard

and livestock safety, and chemical, electrical and fire safety. Each year,

the Grand Prize winner receives $100, twelve First Prize winners receive

$50 and twelve Second Prize winners receive $25.
