An inquest into the death of Michael Stochmal will take place March 31st toApril 11th, 2003, at 9:30 am in a Regina location to be announced at a
later date.
On September 1st, 2001, Regina Police were called to the scene of a
stabbing of the nine-year-old son of Michael Stochmal. Police struggled
with Stochmal to arrest him. Various measures were used to attempt to
subdue Stochmal, including the use of pepper spray. Stochmal was taken to
hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The inquest has been ordered by the Chief Coroner for Saskatchewan.
Inquests are open to the public. Evidence is given before a six-person
jury, summoned at random. In addition to establishing when and where the
death occurred and the medical cause of death, the coroner's jury may make
recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
The presiding coroner will be Hugh Harradence of Prince Albert.
