IMPROVING HIGHWAY 1 EAST OF WOLSELEY

Released on November 22, 2002

Construction for improvements on Highway 1 east of Wolseley has begun.

"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work for this $2 million

project is underway with completion expected next summer in 2003."

The improvement project on Highway 1 begins 7 km west of Grenfell and will

continue west for a total distance of approximately 13 km. An estimated 33

full-time workers will be needed to complete construction of the subgrade.

Wappel Construction Co. Ltd. of Regina was awarded the contract.

"The subgrade construction is required for the continued twinning of

Highway 1," Wartman said. "Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is

committed to twinning Highway 1 East by 2012. The project underway for the

Wolseley area will go a long way toward helping us meet that commitment,

and will enhance economic development opportunities and improve driver

safety."

Part of the funding for this project, $500,000, comes from the

Transportation Partnership Fund. The Government of Saskatchewan created

the Transportation Partnership Fund (TPF) in 1997. The TPF receives

revenue from Transportation Partnerships Program agreements taken with

industry to improve the efficiency of their truck haul operations.

An advisory committee represented by the Department of Highways and

Transportation, the Saskatchewan Trucking Association, the Saskatchewan

Chamber of Commerce and the Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan develop an

annual highway improvement program from the funds accumulated in the TPF.

The government has committed $293 million to building better highways in

2002-2003. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved

this year.
