CALVERT ISSUES VANIER CUP CHALLENGE

Released on November 22, 2002

Premier Lorne Calvert has added his support to the thousands of

Saskatchewan citizens who will be cheering on the University of

Saskatchewan Huskies in Saturday's Vanier Cup. And he's issued a challenge

to the Premier of Nova Scotia on the outcome of the game.

The University of Saskatchewan team meets the Saint Mary's University

Huskies from Halifax for Canada's national university football

championship. Tomorrow's Vanier Cup game is being played in Toronto's

Skydome and will be telecast nationally by TSN.

"In the unlikely circumstance that Saint Mary's should win this year's

Vanier Cup, I am prepared to deliver a Saskatoon berry pie to Premier

Hamm. However, this offer is made only if the Premier of Nova Scotia

accepts my challenge and provides a fresh lobster if Saskatchewan emerges

as the national champion. I have formally issued my challenge to Premier

Hamm this morning," Calvert said.

"First the Saskatoon Hilltops won the Canadian Junior Football League

championship by defeating the St. Leonard Cougars from Quebec last

weekend. Then came the Huskies' 22-0 victory over Montreal's McGill

University in the national university semi-final. These terrific teams

have once again shown Canadians that Saskatchewan is a potent force in

Canadian football," Calvert said.

"The Saskatchewan Huskies won the national championship in 1990, 1996 and

1998. We're looking forward to adding 2002 to that outstanding record."

Calvert said he expects Premier Hamm will accept his challenge. Calvert

added that he is looking forward to a Nova Scotia lobster dinner.
