PROVINCE FUNDS SASKATCHEWAN SCIENCE CENTRE

Released on November 21, 2002

The Saskatchewan Science Centre will receive an additional $450,000 from

the provincial government this year, allowing it to operate without a

deficit and focus on strategic growth.

"The Saskatchewan Science Centre is an important educational and tourism

attraction in our province," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne

Crofford said. "We are pleased that this additional funding will support

the sustainability and growth of the Science Centre."

Chair of the Saskatchewan Science Centre Board of Directors Scott Manson

expressed appreciation for the support shown by the provincial government.

"This announcement is great news for the Saskatchewan Science Centre

because it provides us with the opportunity to continue to enhance the

facility and make it an educational attraction the whole province can take

pride in," Manson said.

"This funding will provide some stability and much-needed operational

funding for the Science Centre," Science Centre Executive Director Wayne

Hellquist said. "The future of the Science Centre looks so much brighter

with this increased funding."

Since it opened in 1989, the centre has grown to become one of the top

tourist attractions in the province, with almost a quarter of a million

visitors annually. Close to 40,000 school-aged children visit the Science

Centre each year to participate in school-based science education

programs. The only giant screen IMAX theatre in the province was added in

1991.
