NEW LEGAL AID CHAIR

Saskatoon lawyer Robert Gibbings has been appointed Chair of the

Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission. Gibbings will replace Barry Singer who

was recently appointed as a Provincial Court Judge.



"Gibbings brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as

Chair," Justice Minister Chris Axworthy said. "There is no doubt that the

Commission and the people of Saskatchewan will benefit greatly from this

new appointment."



Gibbings began his career in 1981 in general practice with Goldstein &

Goldstein. He is currently a partner in the successor firm of Scharfstein,

Gibbings, Walen & Fisher and serves as Vice-President of the Law Society of

Saskatchewan.



Gibbings has been a Commissioner with the Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission

since 1998 and, prior to this appointment, served as Commission Vice-

Chair. He currently serves as the Director of the Saskatchewan Legal

Education Society Inc. and is a member of the Federation of Law Societies

National Legal Aid Committee.



Other members of the Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission include: Anita

Jackson, Lac La Ronge; Debra Edin, Melfort; Donald Rosten, Saskatoon; Barry

Morgan, Saskatoon; Rod Crook, Regina; and Marilyn Hedlund, Regina.



The Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission provides legal services to persons

and organizations who are financially unable to secure legal services on

their own.
