IMPROVING HIGHWAY 1 NEAR TOMPKINS

Released on November 20, 2002

Grading has begun on 13 km of Highway 1 west of Tompkins.

"This subgrade will form the basis for continued twinning on Highway 1

west," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work on

this $1.8 million project is now underway, and will be completed in the

spring of 2003."

Grading is taking place from west of Sidewood to west of Piapot. Kays

Construction Ltd. was awarded the contract for the job. An estimated 33

full-time workers will be needed to complete the project.

"Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is committed to twinning Highway

1 West by 2004 - four years ahead of the original schedule," Wartman

said. "This project will go a long way toward helping us meet that

commitment, enhancing economic development opportunities and improving

driver safety."

The government has committed $293 million to building better highways in

2002-03. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved this

year.
