Released on November 15, 2002
Southern Saskatchewan is set to benefit from 12 highway improvementprojects and three gravel stockpiling contracts worth $29 million,
following the release of the 2002 Winter Tender Schedule.
"For three consecutive years, the province has released substantial Winter
Tender Schedules, reaffirming our commitment to building better highways,"
Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said.
In southern Saskatchewan, highlights of the Winter Tender Schedule include
77 km of improvements to five key thin membrane surface (TMS) corridors
valued at $9.7 million. These improvements are:
Grading 12.75 km of Highway 6 from the US border to 13 km north;
Grading 25 km of Highway 13 from Horizon to east of the junction of
Highway 36;
Grading 7 km of Highway 37 through the Frenchman River Valley;
Grading 14 km of Highway 47 from 9.7 km north of the Corning Access
to the junction of Highway 48; and
Paving 18.4 km of Highway 48 from the Manitoba border to Fairlight.
In southern Saskatchewan, $17.4 million has been dedicated to resurface 117
km on four different highways. This includes:
Resurfacing 10 km of Highway 1 from Moosomin, west;
Resurfacing 19.6 km of Highway 1 between Grenfell and Wolseley;
Resurfacing 16.1 km of Highway 1 from McLean to Balgonie (westbound
lanes);
Resurfacing 20.4 km of Highway 1 from east of Webb to west of
Antelope (westbound lanes);
Resurfacing 25.3 km of Highway 11 from northwest of Craik to
northwest of Davidson (southbound lanes);
Resurfacing 16 km of Highway 13 from Assiniboia, west; and
Resurfacing 9.2 km of Highway 39 from northwest of Milestone to
Corrine.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's 2002 Winter Tender Schedule,
valued at $70.9 million, will provide Saskatchewan road builders the
opportunity to deliver 36 different highway improvement projects and 12
gravel stockpiling contracts in the southern, central and northern regions
of the province.
Releasing the Winter Tender Schedule at this time will:
Minimize haul road damage, as gravel is hauled when the road beds
are frozen;
Generate seasonal employment for the road building industry and
ensure it has more time to prepare bids and determine workload,
staffing and equipment requirements for the upcoming construction
season; and
Help ensure timely delivery of highway improvements next spring.
In the southern region, $1.9 million will be spent on gravel stockpiling to
ensure surface repair materials are in place for patching, sealing and
other maintenance work next spring.
