Released on November 15, 2002
Northern Saskatchewan is set to benefit from seven highway improvementprojects and five gravel stockpiling contracts worth $15.7 million,
following the release of the 2002 Winter Tender Schedule.
"For three consecutive years, the province has released substantial Winter
Tender Schedules, reaffirming our commitment to building better highways,"
Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said.
Major project highlights of the Winter Tender Schedule in northern
Saskatchewan include improving 66 km of highway valued at $8.6 million.
Projects include:
Grading 10 km of Highway 123, southwest of Cumberland House;
Grading 14.7 km of Highway 969 from the junction of Highway 2 to
the junction of Highway 926;
Widening and surfacing 5.4 km of Highway 23 from the junction of
Highway 3 to 5.4 km south;
Strengthening and paving 15 km of Highway 26 from 29 km north of
St. Walburg to the junction of Highway 304; and
Surfacing 21.4 km of Highway 155 from 5 km south of the Beaver
River to the Waterhen River.
In northern Saskatchewan, $3 million has been dedicated to resurface 20.5
km of Highway 55 through the following projects:
Resurfacing 10.9 km of Highway 55 from east of Garrick to east of
Choiceland; and
Resurfacing sections of Highway 55 from the junction of Highway 924
to Green Lake.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's 2002 Winter Tender Schedule,
valued at $70.9 million, will provide Saskatchewan road builders the
opportunity to deliver 36 different highway improvement projects and 12
gravel stockpiling contracts in the southern, central and northern regions
of the province.
Releasing the Winter Tender Schedule at this time will:
Minimize haul road damage, as gravel is hauled when the road beds
are frozen;
Generate seasonal employment for the road building industry and
ensure it has more time to prepare bids and determine workload,
staffing and equipment requirements for the upcoming construction
season; and
Help ensure timely delivery of highway improvements next spring.
In the northern region, $4.1 million will be spent on gravel stockpiling to
ensure surface repair materials are in place for patching, sealing and
other maintenance work next spring.
