The Resort Village of Kannata Valley and the Village of Saskatchewan Beach
now have a safe, reliable and "green" method of sewage disposal with the
completion of their joint lagoon project. This $316,796 project was funded
by more than $200,000 in assistance from the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Program with the remaining funds coming from the communities.
"The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program is ensuring the people of
Saskatchewan have up-to-date infrastructure systems," Osika said. "Our
main priorities are water and wastewater projects and upgrades, solid waste
management and recycling in order to protect people and the environment."
"Through joint investments in local infrastructure with the provincial and
municipal governments, the Government of Canada can support important
priorities identified by Saskatchewan communities," Secretary of State
Stephen Owen said (Western Economic Diversification) (Indian Affairs and
Northern Development). "The construction of projects such as this combined
lagoon system help fulfill the "green" focus of the program - municipal
projects that address improved water quality, the protection of our
environment and energy efficiency."
The Resort Village of Kannata Valley, in association with the Village of
Saskatchewan Beach recognized their communities' need to safely dispose of
sewage. The two-cell (primary and evaporation cells) lagoon was
constructed to be of sufficient size for a projected population of 620
permanent and seasonal residents by 2021 and prevent the contamination of
underground waterways and nearby Last Mountain Lake.
This is the second year of the five-year Canada - Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Program (CSIP) that will result in infrastructure
investments of at least $170 million in Saskatchewan municipalities. In
total, more than $33 million in federal and provincial funds will be spent
on the 142 projects announced this year. The program provides up to 2/3 of
the eligible costs associated with community projects. Communities provide
the remaining minimum one-third of the project costs.
Other priorities under the program include local transportation
infrastructure, cultural and recreational facilities, infrastructure
supporting tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed
Internet access for local public institutions, and affordable housing.
