NEW COUNCIL TO FOCUS ON SCHOOL PLUS

Released on November 14, 2002

Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk today announced a new Council on Children

and Youth to implement School Plus - a new concept in which schools are

centres of learning and community support for the children and families

they serve.

"School Plus is a key priority for this government. We have established

this Council on Children and Youth to assist us in implementing this

priority. Through School Plus our goal is for all young people to have the

learning opportunities and supports they need to become knowledgeable,

skilled citizens contributing to our province's prosperous future,"

Melenchuk said.

The council's mandate is to oversee the implementation of the vision of

School Plus. It will engage Saskatchewan people in a collaborative,

consensus-building process about how best to implement this vision. It

also provides a mechanism for shared leadership between government and non-

government agencies with service delivery responsibilities.

Council members are senior representatives from the human services sectors

and community leaders, including the Aboriginal community and youth.
