MORE TWINNING COMPLETE ON HIGHWAY 1 WEST

Released on November 13, 2002

A newly twinned 24 km section of Highway 1 west near Maple Creek was

officially opened today.

Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman led a ribbon-cutting

celebration to officially open the new twinned lanes. Twinning is now

complete from the Alberta border to just past the Highway 21 junction

leading to Maple Creek.

"This latest twinning achievement will enhance safety for travellers on a

stretch of highway that had limited passing opportunities and increasing

truck traffic," Wartman said.

The new lanes stretch from 3 km east of the Highway 21 junction leading to

Maple Creek to 21 km west. These new lanes join the 19 km section opened

last year that lead to the Alberta border. The total cost to construct the

new 24 km of highway was $11.8 million. The cost to grade this section

amounted to $4.4 million, paving amounted to $6.1 million and the Kincorth

Overpass amounted to $1.3 million.

"We are closing the gap on the remaining Highway 1 west twinning at an

accelerated pace," Wartman said. "The final 38 km of untwinned highway

will be fully twinned by 2004."

The department has tendered two grading projects from west of Tompkins to

west of Piapot for another section of twinning on Highway 1 west. Grading

for this future 23 km section of twinning is estimated to cost $3.6 million.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is $293

million. Additional twinning projects that were completed this year

include a $6 million twinning project through the Town of Lashburn, which

was cost-shared by the federal and provincial governments.

The provincial government's commitment to twin Highway 1 across

Saskatchewan and Highway 16 from North Battleford to Lloydminster included

108 km on Highway 1 west from Gull Lake to the Alberta border; 168 km on

Highway 1 east from Indian Head to the Manitoba border; and 103 km on

Highway 16 from North Battleford to Lloydminster. Twinning will be

complete on Highway 1 west in 2004, Highway 16 in 2010 and Highway 1 east

in 2012.
