AGRICULTURAL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

Released on November 8, 2002

Dr. Gerry Kraay, retired Director of the Genetics Branch, Saskatchewan

Research Council, will be inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of

Fame on November 10, 2002.

Dr. Kraay is a world recognized leader in the science of livestock

parentage testing. Initially an expert in blood typing, he has been

instrumental in promoting DNA-based technologies for parentage verification

and identifying genetic traits in animals, which breeders can use in their

selections for elite breeding lines.

"We should all be proud of the exceptionally talented people this province

has," Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Research Council Eldon

Lautermilch said. "Work like Dr. Kraay's not only benefits the

agricultural sector, but the province as a whole by positioning us as world-

leaders in research."

One of Dr. Kraay's most notable accomplishments is the establishment of

Bova-Can Laboratories in Saskatoon (formerly known as the Bovine Blood

Typing Laboratory).

"The services provided by this Laboratory ensure the ongoing integrity of

Canada's purebred livestock industries," Registrar of the Holstein

Association of Canada Glenn Cherry said.

Dr. Kraay retired from Saskatchewan Research Council in 2000 and he and his

wife continue to reside in Saskatoon. Thanks to Dr. Kraay's efforts, Bova-

Can Laboratories remain leaders in Canadian parentage testing and

diagnostic services for all livestock industries.
