If you're between the ages of 14 and 29, government wants to hear from you.Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford underlined that
message today when she spoke to two classes at Campbell Collegiate and an
additional dozen classes throughout the province hooked into the session
through Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) distance learning
system.
"Government wants your involvement in issues affecting you and our entire
province," Crofford said. "Youth involvement is important if Saskatchewan
is to realize its full potential. The first step in the process of getting
youth actively working with government is to create a means of
communication that works for you."
Crofford said youth groups, including the Saskatchewan Council on Children,
have told government that a Web site designed for youth and with input from
youth would be a good step in the right direction.
"We are very pleased to participate with this collaborative and interactive
event," Campbell Collegiate teacher Randy McLeod said. "We currently
broadcast live to over 70 schools and 500 students per academic year
through SCN's e-learning network. Our involvement with this project
provides a wonderful opportunity for government to connect with youth."
Culture, Youth and Recreation and government's Information Technology
Office have begun work on a Web site designed specifically for Saskatchewan
youth. To collect data regarding youth preferences for information
sources, attitudes toward government, knowledge of government services and
preferences for a youth web site, youth ages 14-29 are encouraged to fill
out an e-survey available on the Web site at www.cyr.gov.sk.ca.
"The Council on Children also told government, 'Don't talk about us without
us'," Crofford said. "We've heard that message and will be developing a
number of ways of engaging young people from across the province in issues
important to them."
