SASKPOWER CELEBRATES PROVINCIAL HISTORY BY SUPPORTING WDM

Released on November 1, 2002

The Western Development Museum (WDM) and SaskPower are joining forces to

offer residents a glimpse into the past with the development of The Story

of Rural Electrification exhibit at the WDM facility in Saskatoon.

SaskPower is contributing $100,000 toward development of this exhibit,

which will be part of the WDM's Winning the Prairie Gamble - Farm Life in

Saskatchewan centennial project. The Story of Rural Electrification will

focus on the rapid expansion of electrical service brought about by passage

of The Rural Electrification Act in 1949.

"Our people have a history of ingenuity, perseverance and a pioneering

spirit - and this new exhibit will show how all three of those

characteristics were essential to the success of the rural electrification

program - which remains today as an important milestone in our province's

development," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "Only 12 years after beginning

work to bring electricity to rural Saskatchewan, SaskPower had completed

the mammoth task of providing electrical service to 58,000 farms in rural

Saskatchewan. Even today, this accomplishment remains an impressive

testament to the hard work and dedication of SaskPower employees."

"The WDM is pleased to have SaskPower's support in bringing The Story of

Rural Electrification to life," WDM's Executive Director David Klatt

said. "As our province's centennial celebrations draw near, the WDM

remains focused on documenting our province's accomplishments, and

exploring new ways to share these stories with future generations."
