Weyburn residents are one step closer to seeing a new long-term care
facility built in their community.
Health Minister John Nilson was in Weyburn today to announce provincial
approval of the $21.2-million facility, to be known as Tatagwa View. The
provincial commitment is $14.4 million toward the final project cost; the
remaining $6.9 million will be raised by local residents.
"I am very pleased to be here today to bring this good news from our
government to the people of the Weyburn area," Nilson said. "We have
worked long and hard together to develop this project. It is an
outstanding example of the benefits of communities and government working
together to meet the needs of local residents."
Tatagwa View will replace the aging Souris Valley Extended Care Centre and
provide a more modern, home-like atmosphere for long-term care residents.
Saskatchewan Health has worked closely with the former South Central Health
District to plan the new facility. It will continue to collaborate with
Sun Country Health Region, which encompasses the former South Central,
South East and Moose Mountain health districts, to complete the project.
"Providing quality supportive services for the seniors of our province was
clearly outlined as a priority in our Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health
Care," Nilson said. "This new facility will improve the lives of long-term
care residents in Weyburn and area while at the same time providing an
improved workplace for our valued health providers."
The new facility will include 135 long-term care beds, 20 adult day care
spaces, regional health authority offices, and space for support services,
physiotherapy, long-term care administration, central dietary, regional
laundry and child day care.
"We are very pleased to move ahead with Tatagwa View," Sun Country Health
Region Chair Earl Kickley said. "This project is important to the
community as a whole and will meet the future needs of our pioneers as they
live in a home-like environment which enhances their quality of life."
