NEW ESTEVAN JUDGE APPOINTED

Guy Chicoine, Q.C. has been appointed a judge of the Provincial Court for

Estevan.



"Judge Chicoine is a well-respected member of the legal community in

Estevan and Southeast Saskatchewan," Justice Minister Chris Axworthy

said. "His extensive knowledge of corporate, civil, family, and criminal

law will serve him well in his new role as a Provincial Court judge."



Judge Chicoine has practised law in Saskatchewan for more than 22 years.

He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan

in 1979 and began his legal career with the firm of Hill, McLellan, Ball,

Cundall and Bridges in Estevan. In 1985, Judge Chicoine became a partner

in the firm of Chicoine and Billesberger. Prior to his appointment, Judge

Chicoine practised law under the firm name of Chicoine Law Firm, in

association with Komarnicki Trobert.



Judge Chicoine, a member of the francophone community, has been active with

L'Association des juristes d'expression francaise de la Saskatchewan since

1988. He is currently a member of the Executive Council of the

association.



Axworthy said that the appointment of Judge Chicoine is an important step

toward strengthening the provision of french language court services in the

province.



Judge Chicoine is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, serving as an

elected member of the National Council, Saskatchewan Branch since 1986.

From 1995 to 2001, Judge Chicoine served as a member of the Canadian Human

Rights Tribunal Panel.
