BATTLEFORDS BRIDGE OFFICIALLY OPENED TODAY

Released on November 1, 2002

A second Battlefords Bridge was officially opened today on Highway 16

between North Battleford and Lloydminster.

The opening of the bridge and six kilometres of additional twinned roadways

through the Battlefords is the latest in twinning progress for the

Yellowhead Highway in Saskatchewan. The bridge will carry traffic for a

future twinned lane connecting North Battleford to Lloydminster.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman and local

representatives participated in a ribbon cutting at the bridge.

"This new bridge is a great achievement in the overall twinning initiative

on our National Highway System," Wartman said. "It will serve as a

striking landmark for the Battlefords area and for all of Saskatchewan."

The cost to build the $10.4 million bridge was financed solely by the

Department of Highways and Transportation. The federal government cost-

shared a portion of the $11.2 million in construction costs for the related

roadways through their Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program (SHIP).

The new westbound bridge is located on the North Saskatchewan River by

North Battleford and runs parallel to the existing bridge, which now only

services east and northbound traffic.

Final finishing touches such as the completion of the roadway lighting and

landscaping will be completed next spring.
