NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN ILE A LA CROSSE ANNOUNCED

Released on May 27, 2002

Today students in Ile a la Crosse are celebrating news of a new high school

for the community. The provincial government has approved funding of

$100,000 for planning and design of the new school.

"We are investing in schools, in students, and in the future of

Saskatchewan," Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk said. "The high school wing

of Rossignol School in Ile a la Crosse has served students very well for

close to 50 years. However, the time has come to provide students with a

new, modern education facility."

The planning and design work will take about a year. Construction is

expected to begin in the summer of 2003 and to be completed in 2004.

Saskatchewan Learning will share the cost of construction with the Ile a la

Crosse School Division. Minister Melenchuk also encouraged the Ile a la

Crosse School Division to explore the possibility of a joint-use facility

with local partners in the community.

"A new high school is good news because it means a better place to continue

building strong minds here in the community," Northern Affairs Minister

Buckley Belanger said. "This government is committed to building

opportunities for people in the North, and we know education is a critical

first step."

"The Board of Education has dreamed of and planned for a centre of

excellence, to ensure lifelong learning opportunities are available for

high school students and the community,"

Ile a la Crosse School Board Chair Louis Gardiner said. "Building a new

school is, and will always be, an historic event for the generations to

come."

With the $40 million in the Department of Learning kindergarten to grade

twelve capital budget, approximately 140 school construction, renovation or

upgrading projects will be funded in communities around the province this

fiscal year. An additional $20 million over four years for school

facilities is available from the Centenary Fund, which was announced in

2000.

"This project is part of the government's commitment to invest in modern,

well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students," Melenchuk

added.
