INCREASING MUNICIPAL REVENUE SHARING

Released on May 22, 2002

The $10 million increase to municipal revenue sharing announced in the 2002-

03 budget will soon be implemented.

Amendments to The Municipal Revenue Sharing Act introduced today implement

the increase in revenue sharing to urban and rural municipalities by $9.2

million. The distribution of the $797,000 increase in revenue sharing to

northern communities will be established in The Northern Municipalities

Revenue Sharing Program Regulations.

"This year revenue sharing for urban and rural municipalities totals $59.8

million which is an increase of 18 per cent over last year," Government

Relations Minister Ron Osika said. "This increase shows that the

government recognizes and supports municipalities throughout the province."

The increase provides an additional $4,892,000 for urban municipalities and

$4,311,000 for rural municipalities. The distribution strategy for revenue

sharing was reached in consultation with the Saskatchewan Urban

Municipalities Association and the 13 cities for urban municipalities and

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities for the rural

municipalities.

The increase to the Revenue Sharing Pool for cities is $3.6 million and for

towns, villages and resort villages is $1.3 million. Each urban

municipality will receive the same unconditional revenue sharing grant as

in 2001-02 and an increase of $6.80 per capita.

For rural municipalities the $4.3 million increase is being allocated by

increasing the Road Preservation and Construction component of the

unconditional funding pool. Each rural municipality will receive an

increase in the amount received from this component in 2002-03.
