WATER RELEASES FROM ALAMEDA RESEVOIR

Released on May 17, 2002

Sask Water will be releasing water from the Alameda Reservoir in order to

fulfill Saskatchewan's obligations under international water agreements.

Under the Canada-USA Agreement For Water Supply and Flood Control In The

Souris River Basin, Saskatchewan must deliver 50 per cent of the natural

flow of the Souris River to the United States this year.

To fulfill this agreement, a release of 1.6 cubic metres per second from

Alameda reservoir was initiated May 9th and is expected to continue until

the end of the month. The reservoir water level was 561.15 metres on May

9th and will decline to 560.9 metres by the end of the month. The full

supply level of the reservoir is 562 metres.

Water levels in Mouse Mountain Creek and the Souris River between Alameda

Reservoir and the International Border will increase by about 50

centimetres as a result of this release. No problems at low level

crossings are anticipated.
