RENOVATIONS AT HILLCREST ELEMENTARY

Released on May 1, 2002

Renovations and a major addition are planned for Hillcrest Elementary

School in Estevan in time for the 2003 school year.

"Hillcrest Elementary School has served students very well for over 40

years," Learning Minister Jim Melenchuk said. "However, the time has come

to upgrade this school and provide a more modern education facility."

The 420 square metre addition will include a new resource centre, computer

laboratory and seminar space. Renovations will enhance heating and

ventilation systems as well as provide space for new programs such as arts

education. Construction costs are estimated to be $2.9 million and will be

shared by Saskatchewan Learning and the Estevan Public School Division.

In 1995, the four school boards in the Estevan area - the Comprehensive

School Board, the Public School Board, the Roman Catholic Separate School

Board and the Rural School Board - collaborated with Saskatchewan Learning

in the development of an educational facilities plan for the community.

The Hillcrest School renovation is the final phase of this plan.

"The Estevan Public School Board receives the news of approval for the

Hillcrest School project with deep gratitude," Estevan Public School

Division Chairperson Shirley Batters said. "This is the final major

addition and renovation project that needs to be done to improve delivery

of a kindergarten to grade eight program. The next year will be a very

exciting and revitalizing time for our school division. We will see two

projects come to fruition. Our new school that we are building with our

partners in Estevan Rural is currently out to tender and the Hillcrest

School renovations will now be proceeding."

Other Estevan school projects approved since 1995 include: an addition and

renovations at Pleasantdale Elementary; renovations at the Comprehensive

High School to accommodate the Southeast Regional College; renovations and

an addition at Westview Elementary; an addition and renovations at St.

Mary's Elementary; and the construction of a new shared elementary school

to replace Scotsburn Elementary and Hillside Elementary. By September,

2003 the Estevan Public School Division will be able to close the Estevan

Junior High School and complete the conversion of Hillcrest Elementary to a

kindergarten to grade eight system.

"During the past six years the provincial government has committed more

than $15.5 million to renew the educational facilities in Estevan,"

Melenchuk said. "The school boards are to be commended for their co-

operation and innovation in facilities planning."

With the $45 million in the Department of Learning kindergarten to grade

twelve capital budget, including $5 million from the Centenary Fund,

approximately 140 school construction, renovation or upgrading projects

will be funded in communities around the province this fiscal year.
