IMPROVING HIGHWAY 13 NEAR LAFLECHE

Released on March 20, 2002

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing 24.5 km of Highway 13 to the east

and west of Lafleche this construction season.

"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work on this $2.7 million

resurfacing project will begin in mid-April, 2002, and should be completed

by the end of August. Completion of this job will require an estimated 44

full-time workers."

The improvement project on Highway 13 will begin 9 km east of Lafleche and

will end 16.2 km west of Lafleche. In addition to resurfacing, the highway

will receive a double seal coat. Work began in early February on gravel

crushing and stockpiling in preparation for construction. Four stockpiles

have been established at Kincaid, Gravelbourg, Limerick and Willows.

"Highway 13 has experienced an increase in truck traffic, leading to

rutting and rough sections on this highway," Wartman said. "We are

resurfacing it to repair the deterioration. Saskatchewan Highways and

Transportation is working hard to fix roads across the province to improve

driver safety."

W.F. Botkin Ltd. was awarded the resurfacing contract.

This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for

Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter

Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway

improvements this spring.

Other improvement projects planned for Highway 13 this construction season

include resurfacing 20.6 km west of Pangman and 11.6 km west of Arcola.

Last season, at total of 42 km of Highway 13 was resurfaced near Weyburn,

Assiniboia and Stoughton.

The department's budget this year is $311.7 million, which will help to

resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern highways.
