IMPROVING HIGHWAY 11 NEAR CRAIK

Released on March 20, 2002

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing the west and east lanes of

Highway 11 near Craik this construction season.

"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Road work for this $3.6

million resurfacing project is anticipated to begin in early June, and

should be completed by mid-July. Completion of this job will require an

estimated 40 full-time workers."

The improvement project on the west lane of Highway 11 will begin 2 km from

the north access to Craik, to 1.7 km from the south access to Craik. On

the east lane, resurfacing will begin 2.5 km north of Craik and will

continue all the way to the north access of Aylesbury. In total 24.2 km of

the twinned highway will be resurfaced. Work began in January on gravel

crushing and haul in preparation for construction.

"Highway 11 has seen an increase in truck traffic, leading to wear and tear

on this highway," Wartman said. "We are resurfacing a section of this

highway as it has deteriorated over the past number of years. Saskatchewan

Highways and Transportation is working hard to fix roads across the

province and improve driver safety."

Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon has been awarded this

resurfacing contract.

This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for

Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter

Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway

improvements this spring.

The department's budget this year is a record $311.7 million, which will

help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per cent of

provincial traffic, and resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern

highways.
