Resurfacing will take place on 15.7 km of Highway 1 near Webb and Tompkinsin the 2002 construction season.
"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and
Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work for this $1.4 million
resurfacing project will begin in early July, and should be completed by
mid-August. This job will require an estimated 24 full-time workers."
Resurfacing on the westbound lane of Highway 1 will take place from 8.6 km
west to 19.8 km west of the Junction of Highways 1 and 32, near the town of
Webb. On the eastbound lane of Highway 1, resurfacing will occur from 1 km
west to 5.5 km west of Tompkins, for a total distance of 15.7 km. Work
will begin in April on gravel crushing, haul and stockpiling in preparation
for construction.
"This section of Highway 1 has experienced an increase in truck traffic,
leading to wear and tear," Wartman said. "We are resurfacing it to repair
the deterioration. This project is part of our focus on rebuilding rural
highways, repaving major provincial highways and continuing twinning."
Potzus Paving and Road Maintenance Ltd. of Yorkton was awarded the
resurfacing contract.
This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for
Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter
Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway
improvements this spring.
The department's budget this year is a record $311.7 million, which will
help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per cent of
provincial traffic, and resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern
highways.
