Resurfacing will take place on 15.4 km of Highway 1 between Indian Head andSintaluta in the 2002 construction season.
"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and
Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work for this resurfacing
project will begin in early June, 2002, at a cost of $1.8 million, and
should be completed by the end of June. This job will require an estimated
25 full-time workers."
The improvement project on Highway 1 will begin 1.6 km east of Sintaluta,
and will continue west for 15.4 km toward Indian Head. Work began in
February on gravel crushing, haul and stockpiling in preparation for
construction.
"This section of Highway 1 has experienced an increase in truck traffic,
leading to wear and tear," Wartman said. "We are resurfacing it to repair
the deterioration. This project is part of our focus on rebuilding rural
highways, repaving major provincial highways and continuing twinning."
This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for
Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter
Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway
improvements this spring.
Ramco Paving Ltd. of Regina was awarded the resurfacing contract.
The department's budget this year is a record $311.7 million, which will
help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per cent of
provincial traffic, and resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern
highways.
