International Women's Day, March 8th, is a day to recognize initiatives to
support and improve the quality of life for women and their families.
"Those initiatives have been carried out in a number of areas, targeted at
improving the income, health and equity of women," Minister Responsible for
the Status of Women Judy Junor said.
"In the past year, our government increased maternal and parental leave
entitlements, making it more affordable for both women and men to spend
more time at home with their infant during such an important time in a
child's development."
Government intiatives have worked to improve women's income in other ways.
Changes to the tax system will result in approximately 55,000 single
parents, low-income seniors, minimum wage earners and working families who
will no longer pay provincial income tax. The Child Tax Credit offered for
the first time in 2001, helps Saskatchewan families with the costs of
raising children.
Other initiatives have focused directly on improving women's
health. "Recently, the province announced the development of screening
programs for breast cancer, cervical cancer and bone mineral density
throughout the province to ensure early detection and treatment," Junor
said.
In recognition of accomplishments made by women, organizations and
community groups are hosting International Women's Day activities. "I
encourage residents to take part in some of these activities to show their
appreciation of the contributions made by women," Junor said.
International Women's Day activities are occurring in Saskatchewan
communities throughout the month of March. For more information on events
