The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have provided more than $800,000for the construction of a new water reservoir and pumping station.
Public Works and Government Services Minister Ralph Goodale on behalf of
Stephen Owen, Secretary of State (Western Economic Diversification) (Indian
Affairs and Northern Development) and Saskatchewan Finance Minister Eric
Cline on behalf of Government Relations Minister Ron Osika today announced
details of the funding support through the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Program (CSIP) for the $1.4 million project.
"The government of Canada is committed to partnering with communities to
help them improve their quality of life," Goodale said. "Municipal
governments can best identify the priorities of their communities. Through
the Infrastructure Program, the federal government invests in these local
infrastructure projects so that communities can achieve their goals."
The new water reservoir and pumping station will help to ensure adequate
water supply and back-up to meet the needs of the growing community.
"This project reflects the priorities of the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Program," Cline said. "Projects that protect our people and
our environment, such as water and wastewater projects and upgrades, solid
waste management and recycling and improving the energy efficiency of
buildings owned by municipal governments are our main concern."
Other priorities under the program include local transportation
infrastructure, cultural and recreational facilities, infrastructure
supporting tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed
Internet access for local public institutions, and affordable housing.
This is the second year of the five-year Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure
Program that will result in infrastructure investments of at least $170
million in Saskatchewan municipalities. In total, more than $22.4 million
in federal and provincial funds will be spent on the projects approved so
far this year. The program provides up to two-thirds of the eligible costs
associated with community projects. Communities provide the remaining one-
third of project costs.
"Martensville is pleased to be receiving funding under the Canada
Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program," Mayor Jim Stone said. "As a rapidly
growing town with population increases of five per cent annually, our
infrastructure is under continuous strain. This project will enable the
town to better meet water supply standards in our community."
Federal funding for this infrastructure project was provided for in the
December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing
financial framework.
