PROVINCE CUTS RED TAPE FOR FILM INDUSTRY

Released on July 18, 2002

The provincial government has made it easier for film and video companies

to do business in Saskatchewan.

Ammendments made to The Film Employment Tax Credit Act and regulations have

reduced red tape for smaller budget productions and paperwork related to

residency requirements for industry workers.

"The film industry knows that Saskatchewan is a great place to do

business," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford

said. "These amendments affirm government's commitment to a competive film

industry."

The amendment regarding financial accounting allows productions with

budgets between $200,000 and $500,000 the option of providing a simplified

financial review.

Another amendment simplifies declarations of residency. It also identifies

that workers who earn less than $500 do not have to submit a declaration of

residency.

"These regulations bring Saskatchewan's practice in line with other

jurisdictions so our province remains fully competitive for the film

industry," Crofford said. "These are progressive changes that remove red

tape for film companies while maintaining the industry's accountability to

the province."

Growth in Saskatchewan's film industry represents a direct economic impact

of about $54 million annually and supports over 700 jobs.
