IMPROVING HIGHWAYS NEAR TURTLEFORD

Released on January 24, 2002

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing a total of 9.6 km on Highways 3,

21 and 303 near Turtleford this construction season.

"As we maintain our focus on fixing the roads, work for this resurfacing

project, worth a total of $1.2 million, is anticipated to begin in mid-May

of 2002, and should be completed by the end of May," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Completion of this job will

require an estimated 24 full-time workers."

The improvement project on Highway 3 will begin 7 km west of its junction

with Highway 26, south of Walburg. Resurfacing will also take place on

Highway 21 from the North Saskatchewan River to 4 km south. On Highway

303, resurfacing will take place on two sections west of Turtleford. Work

began last week on gravel crushing and haul in preparation for construction.

Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this resurfacing

project.

This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for

Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter

Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway

improvements this spring.

"These highways have seen an increase in truck traffic, leading to wear and

tear on the road surfaces," Wartman said. "We are resurfacing sections of

these highways, as they have deteriorated over the past number of years.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is working hard to fix roads

across the province."

The department's budget this year is a record $311.7 million, which will

help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per cent of

provincial traffic, and resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern

highways.
