IMPROVING HIGHWAY 21 SOUTH OF UNITY

Released on January 24, 2002

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing 6.5 km of Highway 21 south of

Unity this construction season.

"As we maintain our focus on fixing the roads, work will begin on this

$790,000 project in mid-June," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark

Wartman said. "The project should be completed by mid-July. Completion of

this job will require an estimated 20 full-time workers."

The improvement project on Highway 21 will begin at the junction of Highway

374 and continue for 6.5 km south. In addition to resurfacing, this

section of highway will also receive a double seal coat. Work began last

week on gravel crushing and stockpiling in preparation for construction.

L & R Asphalt Ltd. of Regina was awarded this resurfacing project.

"We are working hard to revitalize Highway 21 by fixing rough sections that

were caused, in part, by an increase in heavy truck traffic," Wartman said.

This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for

Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter

Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway

improvements this spring.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural

and northern highways.
