Released on January 11, 2002
Fertilizer prices dropped between five and 10 per cent in December, compared to December of last year. This information was released by the
monthly Farm Input Price Survey (FIPS) Report from Agriculture and Food.
The data used in the report is collected from a network of Saskatchewan
farmers located throughout the province.
As well, average prices for farm fuels dropped substantially since
November. Bulk diesel was down six per cent and bulk gasoline down 13 per
cent, while pump gas declined by 10 per cent in average price.
The non-selective weed control, Roundup Transorb, which was the only
frequently reported non-selective product, was five per cent higher in
average price when compared to December 2000 ($86.36 compared to $82.06 per
10 litres).
As for certified seed and inoculants, very large price spikes occurred in
both Roundup Ready (43 per cent increase per pound) and Liberty Link (96
per cent increase per pound) canola seed, due largely to recent insecticide
registration changes and a transition to new seed treatment products.
Certified Roundup Ready canola seed is 21 per cent higher than one year ago
($3.14 compared to $2.60 per pound).
This month's frequently reported livestock products were all down in
average price, ranging from one per cent lower for Ivomec, to seven per
cent lower for one-to-one minerals.
