IMPROVING HIGHWAY 16 NEAR PAYNTON

Released on February 6, 2002

A tender has been awarded for resurfacing 15 km of Highway 16 east of

Paynton this construction season.

"We are maintaining our focus on fixing the roads," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work on this $1.3 million

resurfacing project will begin in early May and should be completed by mid-

June. Completion of this job will require an estimated 24 full-time

workers."

Resurfacing will take place on two sections of Highway 16; these are from

0.4 km outside of Bresaylor continuing for 7 km southeast, and from Paynton

to 8.2 km southeast. Work will begin in mid-February on gravel crushing,

haul and stockpiling in preparation for construction.

HJR Asphalt Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded the resurfacing project.

"This section of Highway 16 has experienced an increase in truck traffic,

leading to wear and tear," Wartman said. "We are resurfacing it to repair

the deterioration which has taken place in recent years. Saskatchewan

Highways and Transportation is working hard to fix roads across the

province to improve driver safety."

This project was identified in the 2001/2002 Winter Tender Schedule for

Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $86.8 million. The Winter

Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway

improvements this spring.

The department's budget this year is a record $311.7 million, which will

help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per cent of

provincial traffic, and resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and northern

highways.
